Life changed for me on Sunday, February 25th. Not that it wasn’t interesting or busy already, but everything changed that day.
That was the day I won the Bassmaster Classic, the biggest competitive fishing tournament in the world. Mostly it changed in a good way, but it sure got busier.
Anyway, let me give you a little rundown on who I am and why I’m doing this.
I’m Boyd Duckett.
I’m 46 years old. I’ve been fishing in tournaments for 30 years, but I never had what you’d call real success until about 10 years ago. That’s when I started winning, or nearly winning, local tournaments.
This is a real simple version of the story, but I kept getting better and winning some bigger tournaments until I finally qualified for this year’s Bassmaster Classic. I had wanted to attend a Bassmaster in the past, because I had friends competing and I wanted to see them. But I was getting closer every year to qualifying and I said I’d never go until I had a chance to compete.
This year, on Lake Lay in Alabama, I did compete and I won the thing. In some ways it’s kind of hard to believe because it was my first try. But everything fell into place. I had a good tournament, and I caught a 6-pound, 9-ounce largemouth on Sunday afternoon that sealed the deal.
Since that time, as I said, life has been busy.
If you were to ask me what I do for a living, I’d say I’m a professional angler.
But really, my other businesses have been the biggest part of my life until the past few years. I own a company in Demopolis, Alabama, called Southern Tank Leasing. I moved to Alabama to operate the business. Before that, I lived in Nashville, where I owned a couple of music companies and managed performers. I also played guitar and sang at local clubs on the weekends.
But right now, the most important thing in my professional life is the ESPN Bassmaster Elite series. This is my first year on the Elite Series tour, and the experience is incredible. I want to do well, but the competition is really tough.
One of the reasons I’d like to devote time to this site is that I want to promote our sport. In my opinion, there’s nothing finer than fishing and nothing more exciting then fishing competitively at the Elite Series level.
I’ll do my best to keep an updated journal of my activities on this years Elite Series tour. Ill also throw a few things at you about fishing. I hope you enjoy this site.
Welcome.
And please let me know what youre thinking.
